Barça centenary and record
Jordi Clos
FC Barcelona 2-6 victory in the Santiago Bernabéu on Saturday night was unprecedented as the team recorded their highest ever tally in the stadium and reached the 100 goal-mark in the league.
The incredible triumph saw Barça net six goals in Los Merengues’ home ground for the first
time ever in a game that is already being thought of as historic. While the 0-5 win in 1973/74 is
still talked about, this win will also go down as one of the great games of the modern era, along
with the two 0-3 wins in 2006 and 1984.
100 goals
Barça also saw the six goals take them to 100 goals scored this season in la Primera. With
four matches of the season still remaining, Guardiola’s side are just seven goals away from
breaking the all-time record for the number scored in a campaign, which was set by Mdarid in
1989/90. The Blaugrana’s previous best was 102 goals in 1997 when the season was 42 games
long.
Legendary trio
Without doubt, three of the key men this term
have been Samuel Eto’o, Leo Messi and Thierry Henry. The trio has netted an incredible amount
of goals with Eto’o having scored 27, Messi 23 and Henry 19, to make a total of 69. Never
before in the history of the league have three players from the same team scored so many. Real
Madrid have come closest when Puskas score 28, De Stéfano, 21, and Del Sol, 17, in 1961.
Henry enjoys playing in the Bernabéu
Henry showed once again that he enjoys playing and scoring in the Bernabéu as he netted twice
on Saturday. He also scored Arsenal’s winner in a 0-1 victory in 2006 and recorded
Barça’s consolation last term in a 4-1 reverse.
