La Masia produces in the Bernabéu
Anna Segura
The pride felt by Barçacredible win in the Bernabéu is even deeper if the fact that more than half of the team came from the club's youth system as six of the starting eleven, and substitutes Bojan and Sergi Busquets, rose through the ranks.
With six goals, three points and a seven-point gap, there are many aspects of Pep Guardiola's
team's win that stand out, but one that will please the Blaugrana fans the most is that so many of
the players come from Can Barça.
Six out of eleven
Guardiola showed that he has faith in the homegrown players
in his squad as he named Víctor Valdés, Gerard Piqué, Carles Puyol, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Lionel
Messi in his starting team.
Bojan and Busquets
Bojan and Busquets were both on the bench as they waited for a chance to enter the game and
share the praise and delight on the pitch. Bojan was introduced in the second half as he replaced
the impressive Iniesta.
"We believe in the youth system"
After the game, Guardiola explained that he was delighted
with the players that had risen through the club. "We believe in the youth system," he said. "FC
Barcelona are the only club in the world that have so many great players that have been at the club
for 12 or 13 years. Then there is money available to add players from the outside who can make a
difference."
Goals and assists
The players that learnt their trade in La Masia starred in the win as Puyol and Piqué were
strong at the back and scored twice at the other end. In midfield the Terrassa-born Xavi had four
assists.
