As part of his intervention in Tui, venue of the 19th Xuntanza de Galicia, Laporta said he is convinced the team has “a competitive proposal” for next year’s football first team.
The Barça president was attending a meeting of Galician supporters clubs along with director Xavier
Bagués and ex player Julio Alberto, which was held in the Teatro Municipal in Tui (Pontevedra). He
said that the squad run by Josep Guardiola next season will be as or even more competitive than
that of the season just gone by.
“Carrying on the same way”
“After 2006, we learned our lesson and experience has led us into this new period of
success, all thanks to the contributions by Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain. We have a very
competitive proposal for next year, with a highly committed set of local players and the idea of
bringing in new pieces to complete the group. We’re on a good track”, he said.
Three or four signings
The Barça president said he and his director of football expect to make “three or four
signings”. Laporta indicated their interest in “three or four top class players to fill
in positions we feel need to be strengthened”.
Eto'o
Joan Laporta also spoke about Samuel Eto'o: “We want to know what plans he has. He has
given us everything, and I don’t just mean his goals, but also his attitude and character. He
has always scored in important games and we have to be grateful for that”. But the president
also confessed that some big offers have come in for the player. “‘Samu' is a top class
player and there are offers for him. Next week we’ll be speaking with his agent. We need to
know what the player thinks, what director of football Txiki Begiristain thinks and also manager
Josep Guardiola”.
“It’s a solid project”
Finally the president said he feels FC Barcelona’s transfer policy is correct:
“We know that players want to come to Barça, because our project is so solid. We will always
buy players at the right price. In times of crisis, we should set an example”.
