Excitement surrounds first session

Vanessa Forns

There was huge expectation as the first team returned to training. Almost 4,000 fans and members gathered in the Mini to watch the first training session under Pep Guardiola.

After finishing their medical in the morning, there was a surge of excitement among the general public as the Barça players prepared for their first workout of the year. The open air session in the Miniestadi provided an excellent opportunity for people to get a first hand glimpse of Pep Guardiola’s new project unfolding.

What an atmosphere

The session was scheduled for 18:30, and huge crowds were seen to be rapidly making their way to the Miniestadi to watch one of the longest awaited moments of the season. Adults and children alike swarmed onto the terraces in the Mini to give a rapturous welcome to the Barça 2008/2009 squad. Almost 4,000 people turned up, filling the area of the stands open to them and singing and applauding their heroes from start to finish.

Newcomers

There were several thrills in store. This was the fans’ first chance to see Guardiola in charge of his troops, and also to see two of the newest signings Gerard Piqué and Martín Cáceres, lining up with the first team and getting to know their new colleagues. Both seem to have fully settled into the club’s way of doing things.

The fans, cameras at the ready, were also in the Miniestadi to welcome back last season’s idols for another season at the club. They were especially delighted to see Messi back in town, and also Bojan. In response to the amazing ovation they received, the players frequently waved to the cheering crowds.

Large number of tourists
There were hundreds of tourists, many kitted out on the new Barça shirt, alongside the locals at the Miniestadi, enjoying the chance to see their heroes, perhaps for the first time. As usual, in the summer months, the Camp Nou is being visited by even more tourists than ever.
