Henry: “The challenge is not getting injured”
Sandra Sarmiento (special correspondent)
Thierry Henry says he loves New York. The French striker assesses the preseason and says his main challenge for this season is not to get injured.
One of the FC Barcelona players who is happiest in New York is Thierry Henry. The Frenchman makes
no secret of his admiration for the US and in particular for the Big Apple. In an interview with
Barça TV and www.fcbarcelona.cat, Henry spoke about what’s going on with Barça and also about
New York.
How do you feel knowing that Guardiola has confidence in you?
“It’s great when you know the boss wants to see
you in the side. But I think the most important thing if you want to do things is to have a compact
and very concentrated group. We’ve worked hard in preseason and even though some players are
injured, we’re hoping to do something this year.”
What are your personal challenges?
“The only thing I want is not to get injured as it is never easy playing if
you’re carrying one. At the moment I have tendon problems but that’s because of the
hard pitches. I think we need to go on like this and do the preseason training and games which are
very important.”
Why are you so passionate about New York?
“When I was very small I always wanted to come here. I’ve
always had this thing about the US and a bit more about New York. Maybe because of Michael Jordan
and the other players, because I like basketball a lot.”
What do you like most about this city?
“Everything. When you get here you see the skyscrapers and that’s impressive.
I’ve seen the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and previously the Twin Towers.
Everything is impressive.”
It’s the city that never sleeps.
“When you’re in New York there’s always something to do, a restaurant
that’s open. There’s an indescribable atmosphere in this city. I feel fine when
I’m here.”
What’s your favourite place in New York?
“There are lots that I like but my favourite district is Soho. I like its streets, the
atmosphere, the stores. It has an indescribable atmosphere.”
Would you play in the US in the future?
I’d like to but right now I’m with Barça and I want to do a lot of things here
and win titles. But it might be something for the future because I like the country and the city.
It might happen.”
Finally, which song reminds you of New York or would you recommend?
“Frank Sinatra’s number. I think it’s the best and I love it.”
