A goal by Lavezzi in the 76th minute put Argentina through to the quarterfinals of the Peking Olympics. Messi had several chances to beat the Australian keeper.
The FC Barcelona player, Leo Messi, is already in the quarterfinals of the Olympics’ football
competition. Although Argentina still has a game to play in the group stage, with the 1-0 win
against Australia the light blues have qualified for the next round.
Messi, active in the first half
From the very beginning of the match the Argentineans took control of the ball, even though
the Australians were occasionally dangerous but without any luck. In the first half Leo Messi led
Argentina. In the 7th minute the Barça striker had a great chance but his shot went over the
crossbar. In the 14th the Aussie goalkeeper stopped a good move by Messi. Almost at the end a shot
from just outside the box went wide.
A goal that qualifies them
In the second half the rhythm of the game dropped off and Leo Messi was hardly involved. The
Argentineans, despite having chances, still didn’t come close. But in the 78th minute
Lavezzi, after a good move by the team trained by Sergio Batista, scored the first and only goal of
the match. With this goal the Argentineans remain in the Olympics.
