F.I.F.A. looks back at Barça’s history

www.fcbarcelona.cat

F.I.F.A.’s official website published an article this Wednesday which talks about Barça as more than a club. The text looks back at the history of the club through the great players who have played for the club.

The article, titled ‘FC Barcelona, much more than a club’, begins by quoting this slogan pronounced by Narcís de Carreras in 1968, and goes on to talk about the origins of the club, with Hans Gamper as the main character.

Why it is ‘more than a club’

F.I.F.A. explain how FC Barcelona “strengthened its symbolic image associated with Catalanism, which was denied by the political regime in Spain” during the dictatorship of Franco. Later on it explains the agreement with U.N.I.C.E.F., when the club wore publicity on the shirt for the first time, but with no financial gain and only aiming to give support.

Barça’s stars

The look at Barça’s history is all about the stars that have played for Barça. Kubala, Cruyff, Maradonna, the ‘Dream team’ and Ronaldinho or Eto’o are some of the names used by F.I.F.A. to describe the major victories - and some losses – of FC Barcelona.

The article ends with a reference to the Barcelona stadium. We are reminded that it was opened on the 24th of September, 1957 and that there have been several big events there, such as the Champions’ League final in 1999 and the opening ceremony of the World Cup in 1982 and it was also home to the Olympic Games in 1992.
