Barça-Basel: Did you know?
www.fcbarcelona.cat
Barça and Basel meet tonight in the fourth round of Champions League group matches. Here is a selection of stats and trivia relating to tonight’s game.
- All three Swiss clubs that have played official fixtures at the Camp Nou in the past have been
defeated. These were the Basel and Zurich select XI that lost 5-2 (1958-59) and FC Zurich who went
down 3-1 (1967/68), both in the old Fairs Cup, while Lugano lost 3-0 in a Cup Winners Cup game in
1968/69.
- Basel have never won away to a Spanish team, having lost four times and managed just one
draw.
- Barça and Arsenal are the highest scoring teams in the Champions League so far, both with
ten goals.
- Guardiola’s side is also the highest scoring in any of the major European leagues,
having scored 28 goals in nine matches, an average of 3.1 goals a match.
- Six players have taken part in every Champions
League game played by FC Barcelona to date: Valdés, Puyol, Alves, Xavi, Touré and Henry. Xavi
Hernández is one of the only two players to have supplied three assists in this season’s
edition of the Champions League, the other being Chelsea’s Frank Lampard.
- Barça and Basel are both outright leaders of their respective leagues following last
weekend’s results.
- Neither side has any players out through suspension, and neither does either side have any
players that stand to miss the next game if they are cautioned tonight.
- The Swiss outfit has been seriously hit by the loss of key player Scott Chipperfield, who
has a urinary infection and will need an operation. The Australian started the first leg in Basel.
