Joan Laporta believes that negotiations about renewing Xavi Hernández’s contract at the club are “going along the right track” and he is confident that a deal can be done with the influential midfielder.
The FC Barcelona president explained that he is satisfied with the way the talks are progressing
and thinks that there is good will on both sides to see an agreement reached. “Our technical
secretary, Txiki Begiristain, is updating me regularly on how the negotiations are going and I
believe that they are on the right track. I also think that things will go well because both
parties want Xavi to continue with FC Barcelona,” he explained.
A key player
Laporta is in no doubt about the importance of Xavi as a
player to the club. “For us, he is a key player and is an example to every youngster that we
have in the youth ranks,” he continued. “He is one more example of how Barça promote
their players from within and shows that with hard work and determination anyone can make it in to
the first team and become renowned in the game.”

Barça the only option
When asked about reports that Xavi had received enquiries from other clubs about his availability,
Joan Laporta said: “I think that Xavi only has Barça as an option at the moment. He knows
that we will do everything that we can, and perhaps even a little bit more, because we are talking
about one of our own youth team products.”
