The best defence against the best attack
David Puig
The team that has conceded the least goal in la Primera take on the team that have scored the most goals on Saturday evening as Sevilla, who have let in eight goals, host FC Barcelona, who have scored 37.
While both teams will be vying for three crucial points in the race for the title, the game will
also pit the best defence against the best attack of the season so far. Manolo Jiménez’s team
have impressed at the back and no team has let in fewer goals. With only eight goals conceded, one
less than Barça, the Andalucian outfit base their game play around their back four and their
effective system. At home Sevilla have conceded just four goals and have not conceded any for their
last three consecutive matches.
Defensive qualities
Despite their attacking strength, Guardiola’s side have also shown
that they can keep teams out as they have let in just nine goals in the league this season, meaning
that while the net has bulged at the other end, the Blaugrana back line has remained sturdy. That
is especially true away from home where Víctor Valdés has let in only four.
Goals galore
Six teams have scored more goals than Sevilla, including FC
Barcelona who have an incredible record of 37 this season. The hosts for this weekend’s
encounter have scored 18 goals themselves, with eleven of those at home. Frédéric Kanouté has four
of those, and is the team’s top scorer, while Luis Fabiano and Ernesto Chevantón have three
each.
Sevilla have won four matches in their Sánchez Pizuán stadium and have lost just once, 0-1 to
Málaga, and drawn another, 0-0 with Valencia.
