Barça and Villarreal are best in 2008

Barcelona and Villarreal are the two teams in the Spanish League to have gained most points in 2008. Both have picked up 74 in 37 games.
In football the important figures are for the period from September to June following the season, but when looking back over 2008 it’s significant that Barça has been, along with Villarreal, the best team over the course of the year.
First half not so good
Barcelona has made a big improvement over the year. In the
first half it ended the 2007/08 season under Frank Rijkaard by picking up 29 points from 21 games
– eight wins, five draws and six defeats. In the same period Villarreal gained 33 points.
Wonderful end
But since September with Guardiola in the dugout Barça’s stats
have taken off. In just 16 games they have gained 41 points, while Villarreal have picked up 29. So
far this season, Barça has only dropped nine points with a record of twelve wins, three draws and
just one loss.
Same rivals to start the year
In Barça’s first match in 2009 the Catalans will go head-to-head with the same side they
played their first League game against in 2008. On 5 January 2008 Mallorca lost to Barça at Son
Moix (0-2), while next 3 January the Balearic Island outfit will be coming to Camp Nou.
