Guardiola named world’s best coach

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) have named Pep Guardiola as the best coach of 2009 after he oversaw a record breaking 12 months in charge of FC Barcelona.


A day after announcing that Barça were the best club of 2009, the FIFA-recognised statistics organisation revealed that the Camp Nou boss was the best trainer in the world.

Six trophies

With few doubting the decision, Guardiola has been honoured for guiding the Catalan outfit to an incredible six-trophy haul that saw included the Spanish league title, the Copa del Rey, the Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup, the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup. The style of football played by the team also impressed along with some incredible victories that stood out, such as the 2-6 win in the Santiago Bernabéu.

Big difference

Guardiola’s success at the helm of FC Barcelona saw him named as the best coach with the biggest points difference in the history of the award. The Barça recorded 300 points, while Manchester United’s Alec Ferguson and Inter’s José Mourinho.

Rijkaard in 2006

The last coach of Barça to win the IFFHS prize was Frank Rijkaard in 2006 when he helped the club to win the domestic title and the Champions League.
