Touré Yayá is heading back to Barcelona after his Ivory Coast side was knocked out of the Africa Cup in the quarterfinals by Algeria. The Algerians needed extra time to run out 3-2 winners.
Touré’s dream of winning the Africa Cup has ended after Algeria dumped the favourites out
of the competition, winning an exciting quarterfinal 3-2 after extra time. Touré played the full
120 minutes of the match.
Extra time
Ivory Coast made a perfect start when Salomon Kalou scored after just 4 minutes. Algeria
equalized just before the break through Karim Matmour.
The score line remained 1-1 until a minute before the final whistle Keita scored to make it
2-1 for Ivory Coast. However, Algeria hit back immediately through
Bouguerra to send the match into extra time.
Bouguerra makes it a brace
The first half of extra time had barely got underway when Bouguerra scored his second to put
Algeria 3-2 ahead – the first time they had lead throughout the game. Both sides had their
chances to add to their goal tally but the score line stayed unchanged to send Algeria through to
the semis and disappoint one of the tournament favourites.
Ghana obtained their ticket for the semi-finals at the cost of host nation Angola. The only goal of the match was scored by Gyan in the 15th minute. Ghana will now face the winner of the quarterfinal between Zambia and Nigeria while Algeria will take on either Egypt or Cameroon.
