It all began at El Molinon
Jesús Carrillo
El Molinon saw Barça win one of their most famous league titles in 1974 and more than 30 years later was again the scene of an important win for Barça as they won their first league game of the fantastic 2008-09 season.
Gijón holds many happy memories for Barça fans: it was there that Johan Cruyff’s fantastic
73-74 side claimed their league title with a 2-4 win and was also the starting point for last
season’s triple winning campaign.
On 21st September 2008, Barça faced Sporting in their third league game of the
season. It had been a shaky beginning under new boss Pep Guardiola, with just 1 point from their
first 2 games, but that all changed at the Molinon, where the team thrashed Sporting 1-6 and began
an amazing run that took them to the title.
19 wins and 2 draws
After that win in Gijon, Barça won 19 and drew 2, against Getafe and Betis, and
never relinquished top spot after taking it in week 8 of the competition, losing just twice before
they wrapped up the title, to Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.
Alongside the Spanish Cup and the Champions League, the La Liga title made it a historic
season for Barcelona and it all started to go right for them at El Molinon.
