Barca to honour 1985 Champions
David Puig
To mark the 25th anniversary of their league title FC Barcelona will honour the 1985 championship winning team, with the players receiving their tribute before the Osasuna game set for 24th March.
The club’s Comissió Delegada met on Friday and decided to organise the celebration of the
1985 League title and has invited all the players of that great team and honour them before the
league game against Osasuna on March 24th at the Nou Camp.
Urruti’s famous save
On
24 March 1985 at the José Zorrilla Stadium, the much missed Urruti saved a penalty that brought an
end to an 11 year title famine. The game ended with Barca beating Valladolid 1-2 and taking their
10th league title, more than 10 years after Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff had brought the title
home in 1974.
Terry Venables’ team had dominated the season from the very first game, when they
demolished Real Madrid 0-3 at the Bernabeu and ran out winners by a clear 10 points from second
Atlètic de Madrid.
English style
With Venables at the helm, Barca played an unfamiliar English style, with the emphasis on a solid
defence and a quick counter attacking punch. The skill of players such as Schuster, Carrasco or
Rojo combined with a no-nonsense hard tackling group of Víctor, Calderé and Esteban Vigo and a top
defenders such as Migueli, Alexanco and Julio Alberto made the ’85 team a formidable outfit.
