Better February than 2009
Jesús Carrillo
February 2010 was a better month than February 2009 for Guardiola’s team, who picked up 2 more points in the league, scored more and conceded fewer goals than a year ago.
Barca began the month of February as league leaders and a month later,
they are still in top spot after taking 9 of the 12 points on offer, compared to 7 points from a
possible twelve in February 2009.
More goals, more points
Barca won 3 of their 4 league games last month – against Getafe,
Racing and Malaga at the Nou Camp, whilst losing their only away game at Atletico Madrid –
their only defeat of the league campaign so far. The team also scored one goal more than last
February, nine, and conceded just three compared to six last year.
Carbon copy in Champions
Barca have had identical luck in the Champions League this year as they
did last February, the 1-1 draw in Stuttgart mirroring the result in Lyon. The big difference has
been the lack of Spanish Cup games: last February they beta Mallorca 2-0 in the first leg of the
semi-final, whereas this year their challenge was cut short in January.
Same number of games
Although they have been involved in three more competitions than last season, Barca have played
exactly the same number of games so far as they had at the same stage in 2009 – a total of 40
games. Last year they had played 24 league games, 7 in the Copa del Rey and 9(including the
qualifying tie against Wisla) in the Champions League. This year they’ve played the same
number of league games, 7 in the Champions League, 4 in the Cup, 3 Super Cup games and 2 more in
the World Club Cup.
