Spanish league Roundup: Week 25
www.fcbarcelona.cat
The weekend was dominated by the struggle between Barça and Real Madrid at the top of the table. Meanwhile, Mallorca continue to dream of a Champions League finish while Jerez won for only the second time this season.
Sevilla went 0-2 up against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu but the home side scored 3 goals in the
final half hour to maintain their unbeaten home record. Substitute Rafael van der Vaart scored the
winner in injury time.
Valencia play on Monday
Valencia will take on Racing on Monday evening in the Mestalla in the last match of week 25.
A win for Valencia will take them 6 points clear of Sevilla but still a full 13 points behind Barça
and Real Madrid.
Mallorca carried on doing what they seem to do best this season and that’s winning at
home. They pulled off a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sporting and are now tied with Sevilla in
fourth place with 43 points.
Two points further behind on 41 come Deportivo. The Galicians enjoyed a straightforward 3-1
home win over relegation candidates Tenerife and along with Athletic Bilbao, have opened up a
considerable gap over the mid-table pack. Bilbao, for their part, dismissed Valladolid 2-0 in San
Mames to record their fifth consecutive home victory and keep their eyes firmly set on a European
finish.
No change at the bottom
At the bottom of the table, Jerez broke an 18-match run without a win to record perhaps the
biggest surprise of the weekend, beating Malaga away 2-4. Despite this, the team from the home of
sherry remain firmly rooted to the foot of the table with just 12 points, 9 points adrift of
safety. As Tenerife and Valladolid both lost, the bottom three stay unchanged.
Zaragoza are now 4 points above the relegation zone after a 1-1 home draw against Atletico
Madrid.
Finally, the matches between Osasuna and Getafe, and Espanyol and Villarreal both ended in
goalless draws, leaving all four teams in mid-table positions.
