Nou Camp to stage Spanish Cup Final in May
Jesús Carrillo
The Nou Camp Stadium has been chosen by the Spanish Football Federation to host the final of the Spanish Cup –La Copa del Rey – between Seville and Atletico Madrid on May 19th.
This will be the third time that the final has been held at the Nou Camp and although it is
scheduled for May 19th, that date could be moved forward a week to the 12th if Atletico are not
involved in the Europa Cup Final in Hamburg.
Twice before
The first time the Stadium hosted a Spanish Cup Final was in the 1962/63 season when
Barca beat Zaragoza 3-1 in front of a packed crowd. The win meant that Barca qualified for European
football the following season, after having finished a disappointing 6th in the league and missed
out on place in Europe via that route.
Seven years later, the Stadium again hosted the final, this time between Valencia and Real
Madrid, with Madrid, who’d beaten Barca in the semi finals, winning 3-1.
Sixth Cup final organised by the club
The final will be the sixth Spanish Cup Final that the club has hosted, with two finals being
held at the old ground in Calle Industria and one at the Les Corts ground.
