Brothers go head to head

Edgar Fornós

Tuesday evening’s CL semi-final clash between Inter and Barca will be a family affair for brothers Gabi Milito (Barca) and Diego Milito (Inter). However, only one of them will make it through to the final in Madrid.

No doubt the Milito family will be finding it difficult to decide who to support on Tuesday and – unlike a league match – nobody can simply wish for a draw. Both teams qualified from the same group but this time it’s a semi-final and only one team can go through to the final. Unfortunately, one of the two brothers will miss out.

Defence v attack

Both Gabi and Diego are in fine form at the moment. Central defender Gaby has made a full recovery from serious injury and earned himself a regular start in Guardiola’s line-ups. Meanwhile, brother Diego is currently top scorer in the Italian league with 19 goals.

League and CL double

Interestingly, along with Barca, Inter are one of the privileged few teams that still have a chance of doing the league and Champions League double. Barca head the La Liga table with 84 points while Inter are second in Serie A, just a point behind Roma.

Only one precedent
Gabi and Diego Milito have played against each other in a competitive match only once. In the 2007-08 season, Barca (having recently signed Gabi from Zaragoza) welcomed Zaragoza (and Diego) to the Camp Nou – the result was a convincing 4-1 win for Barca.
