Messi closes in on Golden Boot
www.fcbarcelona.cat
The Golden Boot, awarded to Europe’s leading goal scorer, is one of the few individual awards Leo Messi has yet to claim, but his two goals against Tenerife have taken him closer to taking it for this season.
Messi’s goals mean he now has 62 points, well clear of the nearest challenger, Ajax’s
Uruguayan striker Suarez whose season is finished, whilst in Spain he is on course to take the
leading scorer award with 31 goals, six clear of Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuaín (Real Madrid).
Challengers well back
Only Di Natale (Udinese) with two games to play and Chelsea’s
Didier Drogba with just one game left and both on 52 points could threaten Messi in Europe, but
they’d both need to score five goals each while the Barca star failed to find the net in the
games against Seville and Valladolid.
Into Barca’s top 10 scorers list
Messi’s 44 goals this season have also taken him into the club’s top ten goal
scorers list, overtaking Kluivert and Mariano Martin and still at only 22 years old, he is well on
course to break many more club records with his goal scoring feats.
124 goals
The top ten scorers for the club are: César (235 gols), Kubala (196), Samitier (178), Escolà
(164), Alcántara (137), Arocha (134), Rivaldo (130), Eto'o (130), Messi (124), Martín (123) and
Kluivert (123).
Messi beats Martín, Romàrio and Eto'o
Only Ronaldo, who scored 34 times in the 1996/97 campaign has bagged more league goals in a season
for the club. The two against Tenerife mean that Messi has overtaken Martin (1942/43), Romario
(1993/94) and Eto’o(2008/09) who all scored 30 league goals in a single season.
