Valladolid’s poor record at the Camp Nou

Edgar Fornós

Valladolid do not have fond memories of previous visits to FC Barcelona, where they have only won twice in the League in 39 attempts. But now they need to make it three wins, otherwise Second Division football beckons.

31 home wins, 6 draws and 2 away wins is the balance of Barça matches at home to Valladolid. Another win for FCB against the violet and whites will secure their twentieth league title – but it’s a big match for the Castilians too, who need to win to avoid the drop.

First Valladolid win at Camp Nou

It was not until 1987/88 that Barça were beaten by Valladolid at the Camp Nou. Schuster and Lineker neutralised Manolo Hierro’s opener, but then a Peña hat-trick stunned the home side (2-4).

Ten years later, another win

2010-01-23_PARTIDO_07.JPGIt would take a decade for Valladolid to repeat the feat. Former FCB man, Eusebio Sacristán, and Peternac put the visitors into a surprise lead, and Juan Antonio Pizzi’s reply proved insufficient. Marcos is the only member of that Valladolid team to still be in the squad today.

Changes to avoid the drop

Valladolid come into the last day in a very precarious condition indeed. They absolutely have to get something out of the game at the Camp Nou if they don’t want to be relegated. They have been turbulent times at the club. Onésimo was brought in to replace Mendilíbar and hopefully bring some fresh ideas, but things didn’t work out, and now veteran coach Javier Clemente has been drafted in to see if his expertise and wisdom can do anything to help the side avoid slipping out of the top flight.

Last match ended 6-0
The last time FC Barcelona entertained Valladolid, they cruised to a 6-0 win. Samuel Eto’o made history with four first half goals, and Gudjohnsen and Henry added to a score that Valladolid need to improve vastly upon this Sunday.
