FC Barcelona clinched their 20th league title on Saturday evening and retained the championship after seeing off the challenge of Real Madrid throughout an exciting top flight season.
With 99 points to their name this season Barça have recorded the
highest ever tally in a league season. The win against Tenerife saw the Blaugrana move onto 93
points which beat the record set by Fabio Capello's Real Madrid team in the 1996/97 season of 92.
Los Merengues chased Barça yet again this term and ensured that they had to maintain their great
form in order to be crowned as champions.
In the past 20 years Barça have had an excellent record in the league. Ten of the
club's 20 championship wins have come since 1990. Starting with Johan Cruyff's Dream Team the club
have been led to glory in la Primera by Louis van Gaal, Frank Rijkaard and now Guardiola. Along
with the ten title wins in that period, Real Madrid have been champions six times and Valencia
twice while Deportivo and Atlético de Madrid have won it once each.
