Guardiola’s spectacular stats
Roger Bogunyà
In his two seasons in charge at the club, Pep Guardiola has run up some spectacular stats – not just for the titles he’s won, but also for the number of wins and the goals his teams have scored.
The win against Valladolid last Sunday which confirmed the
league title
, was Guardiola’s 87th victory in charge out of a total of just 121 games, which
represents a 72% winning record, with 19% of the games ending in a draw and just 9% lost.
Win stats have improved
In one of his first press conferences of the season, Guardiola
warned that he didn’t think the team could possibly repeat last year’s fantastic stats
and yet the players proved him wrong by improving their win ratio from 42 wins in 62 games (68% )
last season to 45 in 59 games this time around (76%).
296 goals in two seasons
And how did the team achieve that? By scoring, and scoring and
scoring! Over his two year at the helm, Guardiola’s teams have scored 296 goals in 121
matches - nearly two and a half a game, with 203 of them coming in league games.
Mind you, the defence has done its part too, with just 94 goals conceded – less than
one a game – that leaves them with a total goal difference of 202 goals over the period since
Guardiola took over.
Goals galore for Messi
Although it’s been clear for a while now that
Messi’s role in Guardiola’s teams was going to be as a goal scorer as well as a
provider, nobody would have predicted he’d carry off the award as both
Spain and Europe’s leading scorer
this season by such a wide margin. He’s scored 85 in the last two seasons – 38
last year and 47 this season – and is already the club’s seventh leading league scorer
of all time.
