Champions wherever you look
Edgar Fornós
Although the basketball and roller hockey league titles are still undecided, it’s already been a record year for FC Barcelona: World Club Champions in football, kings of Europe in basketball and roller hockey, and runners up in European handball.
The 2009/10 season is drawing to a close for the different professional sports sections of the Club
and will go down in history as one of the most successful in the Club’s long history. The
football, basketball, handball and roller hockey teams have set Europe alight in an unforgettable
season.
Football: World Club Champions
The
football team beat Estudiantes de la Plata in extra time to win the World Club Cup in Abu Dhabi and
so complete a unique set of six consecutive titles: Spanish league, Spanish Cup, Champions League,
Spanish and European Super Cups and the World Club Cup. And this season, Barca made it two league
titles in a row with a record total of 99 points. Four titles in a brilliant season.
Basketball – the second Euroleague
Barca
won their first Euroleague in 2003 in the Palau Sant Jordi and this year made it two at the Final
Four in Paris. In addition, Xavi Pascual’s players have won the Lliga Catalana, the ACB Super
Cup and the Kings Cup.
Handball: a great season despite disappointment in Europe
The
handball team travelled to Cologne in search of their 8th European Cup but were denied by the
narrowest of margins. Despite winning for most of the game, Barca Borges slipped to a 36-34 defeat.
However, the disappointment didn’t overshadow a superb season in which the team won the Lliga
dels Pirineus, the Kings Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Asobal Cup.
Roller Hockey – Kings of Europe
The fame of the FC Barcelona Sorli-Discau roller hockey team keeps on spreading. In Valdagno,
Italy, the team coached by Ferran Pujalte beat Roncato Patí Vic 4-1 in the Final Six to lift an
astonishing 19th European Cup.
