Xavi Hernandez has extended his contract with FC Barcelona until 2016, conditional on playing at least half of the matches in his final two seasons. His current runs out on 30th June 2014.
Xavi Hernandez and Club president Joan Laporta put their signatures to the new clauses in the deal,
which link additional seasons to matches played, at lunchtime on Wednesday. Xavi has now committed
the rest of his top-flight career to the Club. The salary and release clauses remain the same
Extension conditions
The conditions that will be applied to the contract extension are clear. If Xavi plays at
least 50% of the games in the last two seasons of his current deal (2012/13 and 2013/14, he will
automatically win a further year - 2014/15.
The same
formula and the same conditions will be repeated a year later. If Xavi plays at least half of the
matches in the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons, he will be automatically renewed until 30th June 2016.
At that moment he will be 36 and will have spent the previous 25 years at the Club – he
joined the youth academy when he was 11.
