“We are one of the best teams in the history of the club”
Sandra Sarmiento
A confident Carles Puyol has insisted that the team are still hungry for titles and stressed: “we want to get even better. We’ve got loads of desire and who knows how far we can go”.
In the space of just 4 months, the team have won five trophies, but their captain Carles Puyol
insists that they want more. Puyol, who has captained the club to two Champions League wins and
three La Lliga titles told reporters: “there’s a great feeling in the team and the
truth is we are all very happy. We are making history at the club and we want to continue working
hard and making the fans happy”.
Famous precedents
Basora, César, Kubala, Moreno and Manchón. Do the names ring a bell?
They were the stars of the team that won the Lliga, Copa, Copa Llatina and Martini Rossi and Duward
trophies in the 1951/52 season – the famous Barca of The Five Cups. But this team of
Guardiola’s has already matched their record and are keen to push on. According to Puyol:
“we are one of the best team sin the history of this club. It’s true that there have
been some great teams in the past, but we are writing our own history. We want to get even better.
We’ve got loads of desire and who knows how far we can go. Even so, we know it’s very
difficult to win a title and we have to keep our feet on the ground”.
Pedro
Maybe the one player who might be forgiven for having his head in the
clouds is Pedro Rodríguez., who’s scored two vital goals in the last fortnight to help Barca
take the Spanish and European Super Cups. However, his teammates are all more than happy with the
youngster’s humility and willingness to work hard: “He played well on Friday and is
getting better everyday. He deserves it all and we are all really happy for him”.
Poor pitch in Monaco
The pitch in Monaco was certainly not in great condition and didn’t make it easy for
spectacular football, as well as being likely to cause injuries and Puyol explained:
“it’s bad for the spectacle – the pitch was in a terrible state and that needs to
be looked into. It’s better that we say this after having won, because otherwise it’d
look like we were looking for excuses”. It remains to be seen what effects the game might
have on the team’s fitness for Monday’s league opener against Sporting, but Puyol
insisted: “we are working to recover from the game as soon as possible”.
Chygrynsky
Friday’s game was the third time Chygrynsky has faced Barca in a year and Puyol was
quick to welcome the Ukrainian to the club: “we’ve played against him a few times
and we know him well. I’d like to welcome him and we’ll all be working hard to help him
settle in”.
The future
Asked about his own future at the club, Puyol repeated his statement of
a few days ago to BarcaTV: “I’ve got another year left on my contract and I’m
just concentrating on playing. Thre’s plenty of time to talk this over and I’m not in
the least worried about it”.
