Guardiola: “A good result for the return leg”
Vanessa Forns
Josep Guardiola is happy with the 0-2 win away to Cultural Leonesa but still cautious: “A good result for the future but there’s a match left and 90 minutes is a long time”.
The reigning champions made this season’s Cup debut with a win and have a foot in the next
round. However, Guardiola remains cautious and respectful: “Football is full of
surprises”.
“These matches are the most dangerous”
Guardiola insisted that he very much valued Wednesday evening’s
victory: “These matches are the most dangerous because they’re taken for granted.
We’ve got a good result and we’re satisfied”. He also spoke about the home team
performance and singled out Ferran, Jito and Jahvé for special mention.
The quality of the lower divisions
With Real Madrid’s 4-0 defeat away to Alcorcón in mind, Josep Guardiola warned about
the quality of football in the lower divisions; “They did fantastically well. It could have
happened to us. In fact it’s already happened to Barça. In divisions such as Second B there
are some quality players. Last year we had a lot of trouble getting past Benidorm. The managers are
very well prepared and work a lot on strategy”.
Jeffren, at right back
One of the surprises of the night was the manager’s decision to start with Jeffren at
right back, a position he had never occupied before: “The situation is that we don’t
have full backs and Jeffren has many qualities. We sensed that he would do a good job and he has to
be congratulated because he did. He proved us right that when there’s a will things always
come out well”.
“Pedro scores goals”
Finally, asked about the two-goal hero of the night, Pedro, the manager emphasised his
sharpness: “Pedro scores goals, that’s the truth. He has that gift and that’s
very important in the long run. I’m very happy with him. You can see in training that he
shoots well with both feet”.
