Contrasting fortunes for Henry and Chygrynskiy

Henry will be at the World Cup Finals in South Africa next summer, but his Barca teammate Chygrynskyi will miss out after France beat Ireland in extra time and Ukraine went down to Greece on Wednesday night.

It was a night of contrasting fortunes for the two Barca players. Whilst the Ukrainian will have to wait till 2014 to feature in FIFA's top tournament, Henry helped France through to another Finals as they drew 1-1 in Paris to win 2-1 on aggregate.

Drama at the Stade France

With Henry starting, France soon stamped their dominance on the game in Paris, though a well ordered Irish team were always going to be dangerous on the break with players like Robbie Keane and Damien Duff up front. Henry had the first chance of the game on 13 minutes, but his effort was deflected wide by John O'Shea.

However it was Ireland who scored first to draw level in the tie, when Keane fired home a Duff cross on 36 minutes.

Francia need extra time

France pressed in the second half, but the Irish counter attacks were increasingly dangerous looking. The scores stayed the same on 90 minutes and the teams went into extra time when Henry's controversial assist set up William Gallas for the winning goal and guaranteed a spot in South Africa.

Chygrynskiy misses out

Ukraine were unable to build on their goalless draw in Greece in the first leg of their play off tie and lost 0-1 to the Greeks at Donbass Arena in Donestk to bid farewell to their World Cup hopes. Dmytro Chygrynskiy didn't feature in the match which was won by a 31st minute goal from Salpin, despite the home team's dominance of the game.

Spain put on another exhibition (1-5)

The Spanish team put on another exhibition in their friendly against Austria in Vienna, running out 1-5 winners with goals from Villa(2), Cesc Fabregas, Guiza and Pablo Hernandez. Xavi, Iniesta and Sergio Busquets all played the first half for Spain and the latter was fundamental in the sending off of the Austrian Pehlivan on 26 minutes after a vicious tackle.
