Ballon d'Or – and head
Jesús Carrillo
Against Deportivo, Leo Messi scored his second header of the season so far. He’s now scored as many times with his head this term as he did in the whole of last season, and there’s still more than six months to go.
So far the Argentine has racked up five headed goals for Barça’s first team. The first came
in the 2005/06 season in a Cup fixture against Zaragoza at Camp Nou (2-1) and last year he notched
another at El Molinón (1-6).
Great header
His second last season came in the final of the Champions League in
Rome against Manchester United. United keeper Van der Sar could only watch as Messi stole between
Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown to meet Xavi’s cross and wrap things up for the Catalans.
Two more against Getafe and Coruña
This term Messi has already headed home the same number of times as last
season. At the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez in Getafe (0-2) and at Riazor (1-3), Messi met centres from
Ibrahimovic and Pedro respectively. Oddly enough both came in the second half and in Barça’s
second strip.
Four braces
Plus away at Deportivo Messi hit his fourth brace of the season so far. The first came in the
return leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Bilbao at Camp Nou (3-0), the second in the League
against Atlético Madrid at Camp Nou (5-2) and the third at El Sardinero (1-4). Messi is the
team’s top goalscorer.
