Ballon d’Or in Camp Nou
David Saura
Camp Nou gave a deserving welcome to Leo Messi and the Ballon d’Or. Messi received the trophy from his mother to great applause, and he offered it to the Barça fans.
After waiting nervously till the players had come onto the pitch, Leo Messi entered to cries of
“Messi, Messi Messi” and walked to the centre circle to shake hands with referee
Iturralde González and Espanyol captain Luis García, before receiving a hug from Barça captain
Carles Puyol.
And Mother came too
The big surprise came when his mother Celia, who lives in Argentina,
appeared to present the award to a clearly emotional Messi. Ronaldinho had also gone through the
same thing in 2006 when Miguelinha had presented him with the Ballon d’Or.
Camp Nou gave Leo Messi a standing ovation; as Messi in turn offered the award to the fans.
Messi is now the first player to come through the Barça youth ranks to receive the Ballon
d‘Or. With the trophy safely in his hands, the injured Messi then returned to the stands with
his mother to watch the game.
Edmilson: “It’s a pleasure to see Barça”
Ex-Barça player José Edmílson was at the match, and he praised Barça’s game:
“They’re amazing. I try to watch them, especially in the Champions League. There are
still quite a few of my team-mates left”.
During the break, Edmilson received a plaque from Joan Laporta. He is now involved through
his foundation, in the XICS centre in Taquaritinga (Brazil): “We now have 470 children, with
over 800 people directly involved. It’s one of the things that made me go back to my country.
I like working in the social sector.”
