Madrid – Barça in European semis

Carvalho to miss first leg
Madrid’s experienced centre half Ricardo Carvalho will miss the first leg in Madrid after been shown a yellow card for a lunging tackle on Tom Huddlestone on 38 minutes of last night’s game.
That means we’ll have 4 Barça Madrid games in just 18 days, with this weekend’s La Liga clash and next week’s Cup Final coming up. Barça are in the semis for the fourth season on the run, whilst this is the first time since they lost to Juventus in 2003 that Madrid are back in the last four of the Champions League.

Full strength team

As promised, Mourinho played a full strength side despite the four goal lead from the first leg and didn’t rest any players ahead of Saturday’s big game, even risking the players who were just a yellow away from missing the semi final first leg -Cristiano, Ramos, Carvalho and Albiol.

Goalless first half

The first half was goalless, though Ozil (min2) and Sergio Ramos, had chances, as did Pavlyuchenko and Bale for Spurs, with the ever dangerous Welsh winger seeing his goal disallowed for an offside flag against Modric.

Cristiano strike

Five minutes into the second half though, Madrid struck as a swerving Cristiano Ronaldo shot was mishandled by Gomes to gift the visitors a goal. Now Mourinho began to ring the changes, bringing on Granero for Sergio Ramos and Kaka for Cristiano Ronaldo to ensure they didn’t see any yellow cards. Defoe hit the woodwork on 73 minutes and Marcelino came close with a cheeky lob soon after, but there were to be no more goals and Madrid were through.

Last meeting 9 years ago

The last time Barça and Madrid met in the Champions League semi finals was in 2002, when Madrid won 0-2 at the Nou Camp and the second leg was drawn 1-1, but the most famous European meeting between the two goes back to 1960 when Evaristo’s diving header gave Barça a 2-1 win that was the first time Madrid had lost out in the old European Cup and was revenge for the previous season’s 6-2 aggregate defeat.
