Since 2008, Barça have won 17 of the 19 ties played over 2 legs in the Champions League and the Spanish Cup, as well as winning the two Spanish Super Cups they’ve played in.
Pep Guardiola’s effectiveness in 2-leg ties began in the 2008-09 season, his first as Barça
1st Team Manager. In Europe, Barça knocked out Wisla Krakow (qualifying round)), Olympique Lyon,
Bayern Munich and Chelsea, the latter two with the 2nd leg at home, and in the Spanish Cup they
knocked out Benidorm, Athletico Madrid, Espanyol, and Mallorca. In both competitions Barça won the
trophies.
Two defeats in 2010
In the following year, season 2009/10, Barça suffered their only two
defeats in the Guardiola era, in 2-leg ties. The first was in the Spanish Cup where, after knocking
out Cultural Leonesa, they succumbed to Sevilla in the last 16. In the Champions they had beaten
Stuttgart and Arsenal before Inter Milan beat them in the semi-final.
Six out of six this season
In the current season Barça have once again been infallible in 2-game ties. In the Spanish
Cup they won them all (Ceuta, Athletic Bilbao, Betis, and Almeria) and in the Champions League they
defeated Arsenal and Shakhtar Donetsk. Madrid is the last hurdle to overcome before the final at
Wembley.
Two Spanish Super Cups
The Spanish Super Cup is a title that is played over two legs and Barça have won the last two
trophies, for which they qualified as League Champions the season before. Athletic Club Bilbao and
Sevilla were their victims. Overall, the team managed by Pep Guardiola have won 19 of the last 21
ties played over 2 legs.
