Zubizarreta: “This is an extraordinarily negative situation”
David Saura (enviat especial) / Anna Segura
Andoni Zubizarreta expressed his surprise at the call up of seven Barça players for Spain’s friendly game against Mexico later this month and he reckons: "they are just not in the right condition to play just yet”.
Reacting to Vicente del Bosque’s decision to call up the seven Barça players, Zubi
explained:“this has to be the first time ever that players who are still on holiday have been
called up for an international game. I’m just speechless, it’s an extraordinarily
negative situation, but in every sport you just have to try and get over these things”.
No preparation
The seven players will have to report for international duty next Monday, without having
spent a single day with Guardiola and the rest of the squad and with the game against Mexico set
for August 11th, they will have precious little time to prepare for the first leg of the Spanish
Super Cup against Seville, which is due to be played on August 14th,
Illogical
Asked as to whether the club had appealed to the Spanish Federation not
to call up the players, Zubizarreta replied: “the Federation knows what Barca’s
situation and the situation of our players is, there’s no need to explain that to anybody.
They have the right to call them up and they are important as World Cup winners, but it’s
obvious what kind of state they will be in when they arrive. It’s not logical to ask them to
make such a trip and such a big effort”.
Super Cup
The friendly against Mexico takes place just three days before Barça travel to
Seville for the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, but Zubi refused to throw the towel in before
the game had even started, declaring: “at Barca we never give up anything!”.
