Pep Guardiola isn’t looking for any excuses ahead of Saturday’s Spanish Super Cup clash with Seville, despite being deprived of many of his big name stars for the game: “I’m taking the best players I have right now. There’s no use in moaning”
With none of his Spanish World Cup winners fully match fit, Guardiola is taking the opportunity
to blood some of his young up and coming talents and insisted: “the circumstances are what
they are for this game and there’s no use moaning about it. We are taking the players we have
with the intention of putting in a good performance”.
“An honour” to play in Super Cup
The boss sees the Super Cup as an important title and explained:
“it’s an honour to figure in it – it shows you did well the season before. We are
taking it very seriously indeed. We have shown we take all competitions seriously and this is no
exception”.
Faith in youngsters
Guardiola again stressed his commitment to bringing youngsters through
into the team, claiming: “I have a lot of faith in these lads because I know them well and
I’ve seen them – that’s why I know they can help us”, though he also
refused to rule out completely making any more signings this summer
Tight lipped on new signings
However, Guardiola refused to be drawn on any of the names being bandied about as possible
signings: “giving my opinion now wouldn’t help. I wouldn’t be doing the club any
good if I started saying I like this player or that one”. One thing the boss is prepared to
talk about though, is the quality of his squad: “I think we’ll do something special
this year. I’ve got some players who’ve shown over the years what they can do and some
great young players. Maybe I’m going out on a limb, but I make a decision based on whether I
believe something or not and I believe in this”.
