Villa, the main attraction at Hampden Park
Jordi Clos
Barça striker, David Villa is just a goal away from becoming Spain’s leading ever scorers as he goes into Tuesday night’s game against Scotland at Hampden Park, for which five other Barça players are in Del Bosque’s squad.
Víctor Valdés, Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, Andrés Iniesta and David Villa are in
Glasgow for Tuesday’s European Championship qualifier. Spain head Group I with two wins from
two so far, whilst Scotland come into the game on the back of a disappointing 1-0 defeat against
the Czech Republic.
With qualification on the right track, attention has turned to Villa, who needs just one more
goal to draw level with Raul on 44 goals for the Spanish team. Villa had his chances in the last
game against Lithuania, but he failed to put them away and will be hoping to equal - and break- the
record on Tuesday.
Luis Enrique confident
Fellow Asturian Luis Enrique is certain that David will go on to get
the goals and speaking after last night’s Barça B win he insisted: “he doesn’t
seem nervous about it to me. He’s getting plenty of chances and for a striker that means
he’s doing what he should be doing – the problem would be if he wasn’t getting
any chances at all”.
Luis Enrique went on: “does anyone really think he won’t beat Raul’s
record? I’m sure he will, it’s just a matter of when. He’ll get not just the one
he needs, but many, many more, both for Spain and Barça – that’s what he’s always
done, score goals!”
