Maxwell looking forward to triumphant 2011

Anna Segura

Maxwell knows that nothing is guaranteed in football, but is hoping that Barça can win every competition it is involved in this 2010.

It’s time for new year resolutions, and as far as Maxwell is concerned, all he wants is to win, win and win again. This is no time for the players to rest on their laurels, and the Brazilian reckons that “you can never settle for anything in football. We have to keep getting better because there is no good in living on our pasts”.

Day to day challenge

Welcome to Afellay

Ibrahim Afellay trained on Wednesday for the first time as an FC Barcelona player. Maxwell sensed the newcomer was happy and promised that “we will be doing all we can to make sure his adaptation is as quick as possible”.

Afellay is someone he considers “very fast, intelligent, talented and able to do things for us … but he will have to get used to the Barça system, and we’re here to help him do that”.

Defence against Levante

2010-12-30_ENTRENO_07.JPGWith Puyol injured and Piqué suspended, Guardiola is missing both of his first choice centre backs for the game with Levante. Maxwell is not too worried, because there are decent players to provide cover, especially Abidal who he says “is a spectacular defender. He positions himself well and always does a very good job”.

Maxwell is also impressed by Bartra, who trained with the first team on Thursday. “He is a great player and he’s still very young. We have our faith in him, and also Fontàs and all the others who come and give us a hand”.

In support of the AFE
Maxwell was speaking before the announcement that Sunday’s game will be going ahead as normal, and he claimed the players “were siding with the AFE”. However, “if we have to play on the 2nd then we’ll play. We have to be professionals at times like this.”
