Four players Guardiola knows well
Jaume Marcet
Guardiola could give Champions League debuts to four reserve team players this Tuesday. Centre back Botia, midfielders Xavi Torres and Abraham and striker Vázquez are all hoping to play their first European game.
Below is more information about the four new players in Barça’s squad for their last CL group
game against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Victor Vázquez. 21. Striker. Though best as a
linkman between midfield and the attack, he can also play out wide or as a centre forward. From the
same generation as Messi and Piqué. Made his League debut last season at Almeria. A talented and
inventive player, his passing and ability to switch the direction of attack are very dangerous.
Abraham González. 23. Midfielder. Last season was a key figure
in the reserve team getting promoted to Second Division B. A hard-working player, he can also play
at right back if required. Made his first team debut in the away leg of the Cup tie with Benidorm.
Has scored once in Second Division B with Barça Atlètic.
Xavi Torres. 21. Midfielder. Another key player in last
term’s promotion campaign. The Barça Atlètic captain has a powerful personality and plays in
the hole though can also operate in the centre of the park. Has a powerful shot and is a tactically
astute footballer.
Alberto Botía. 19. Centre back who dominates in the air both in
defence and in attack. Came to Barça from Murcia as a youngster and has always scored goals thanks
to his height and heading ability. Played with Bojan in the Under-18s and both made their reserve
team debuts two years ago at Huesca. Last season Rijkaard called him up for an Espanyol game. Can
also play at right back and in the hole. Has scored once this season with Barça Atlètic.
