New role for Xesco in Barça
Meritxell Infante
Xesco Espar, until now manager of Barça Cifec, is to take on responsibilities within the area of fitness training.
Xesco Espar is starting a new stage in his relationship with FC Barcelona. He will be moving from
his job as manager of Barça Cifec to a post with responsibilities for fitness training within the
Club, with the brief of guiding and advising the different professional working in this area in the
Club, with the exception of the senior football squad.
Xesco Espar will focus on improving the working methods of the Club’s fitness coaches
as well as studying new tendencies and incorporating them in to the daily routine of the
Club’s sports people.
An expert on sport
Espar is an expert in top level sports and was an instructor at the
prestigious INEFC (Catalan National Institute for Physical Education) in Barcelona for 13 years
(1991-2004). He is a frequent contributor to handball clinics and top level sporting master classes
in Spain and abroad and has taken part in a number of Masters Courses in this field. He has
published three books on handball as well as numerous specialised articles.
This latest challenge is nothing new to Xesco Espar. In the 1997-98 season, Valero Rivera
handed him the responsibility for the fitness programme for the Club’s handball team and for
the next seven seasons he played a vital role in the successes of the team: 3 European Cups, 4
European Super Cups, 4 Spanish Super Cups, 6 Pyrenean Leagues, 3 ASOBAL Cups, 4 ASOBAL leagues, 3
Kings Cups and 1 EHF Cup.
Three seasons as manager
After 25 with the handball section of the Club as a player, youth team manager and fitness coach to
the senior squad, Xesco Espar took over from Valero Rivera as manager of Barça Cifec in 2004.
In his three seasons in charge, he has won all the main handball honours: the Champions
League, the ASOBAL League, the Pyrenean league (twice), the King’s Cup and the ASOBAL Super
Cup.
