Liceo, a prestigious opponent for the semi-finals
Carles Cascante
Barça Soli Discau are through to the semi-finals of the OK League. They will now face Liceo, a prestigious and historic opponent, after seeing off Cemex Tenerife in the quarterfinals of the play-offs for the OK League title.
The men coached by Quim Paüls have beaten Cemex Tenerife again, this time by 3 goals to 4. In a
hard fought game, the Tenerife outfit made it very difficult for Barça, in large part thanks to the
performance of their star player Miquel Angel Sánchez.
After an excellent performance in the first game of the quarterfinal series (9-3), the FC
Barcelona Sorli Discau players were looking forward to a reasonably easy game in the Canary
Islands. But that couldn’t have been further from the reality. With David Páez suspended,
Carlitos López formed the attacking duo with Beto Borregán, but the Argentine star was not up to
his usual standard. However, Borregán more than made up for this by scoring three goals to seal the
win.
Liceo defeat Vilanova
Barça will now take on Liceo, after the Galician side defeated reigning CERS champions,
Vilanova l’Ull Blau, 2-0 in the series, thanks to a 1-2 away win.
The record books suggest that that Barça go into the semi-finals as firm favourites. The two
teams have met three times already this season – twice in the league and once in the Kings
Cup – with three wins for Barça. In round 12 of the Spanish league, Barça thrashed Liceo 0-5
in the Riazor, while in the home game Barça won by 4 goals to 3. In the Cup, Barça came out on top
2-5.
Top scorer
With Cemex Tenerife now out of contention, one of the Barça players looks certain to take the
trophy for top scorer in the league. Beto Borregán, with 36, and Carlitos López, with 33, both have
a great opportunity to overtake Miquel Àngel Sánchez, who has finished his league season with 38.
