Barca Sorli Discau, Kings of Europe
Roger Bogunyà
Barca’s basketball and hockey teams all have one thing in common-victory! This Sunday saw the roller hockey team win the European Cup, just as the basketball team had done three weeks ago, and the handball team just miss out in their European final.
Sunday was a thrilling evening for the club, with Barça Sorli Discau facing Roncato Patí Vic in the
European final in Valdagno and then Barça Borges going for their European title against Kiel in
Cologne. Whilst the Hockey players ran out clear
4-1
winners, Xavi Pascual’s handball team were narrowly defeated
34-36
.
Pujalte’s first title
Barça Sorli Discau have taken the European title eight times in the
last 11 years, but this was the first win for coach Ferran Pujalte, who’d seen his former
team Vic beat Barca in the Spanish Super Cup and the King’s Cup. The season’s balance
in Europe showed eight wins and just one draw – an impeccable record that has been won with
some spectacular attacking hockey and things could get even better next weekend when they could
take the 13th successive Spanish League title. Nowhere else is hockey played so thrillingly as at
the Palau and Pujalte has carried on from the great work done by Figueroa and Paüls over the last
few years that has brought
19
European Cups
.
Xavi Pascual comes close to eighth European Cup
Barca Borges may have had less luck than their hockey clubmates, but
their defeat at the hands of Kiel cannot disguise the great season they’ve had, taking four
titles, with just the league and European Cup escaping them. Coach Xavi Pascual can boast five
titles in the year and a half he’s been in charge as well as taking them so close to an
eighth European title, whilst David Barrufet in his last game, just missed out on his eighth title,
despite a great performance in Cologne.
It’s been a great season all round at the club, with two of the sections winning
European Cups and a third only losing at the last. An unbeatable record in a great season!
