The VII Baku, a huge success
La Orotava was decked out in Barça colours for the weekend of November 17 and 18 for the organisation of the VII Baku that hosted 10 supporters clubs from all around the archipelago. 200 Barça supporters arrived from all corners of the islands.
The well attended VII Baku of Barça Supporters Clubs offered two days of events. FC Barcelona was
represented by board member Jacint Borràs, along with a member of the Social Commission, Josep
Ignasi Macià and former player Julio Alberto Moreno. All three were able to enjoy a fun packed
weekend with Barça supporters from this far flung part of Europe.
Inauguration of headquarters
The activities began on Friday 16 November when the Barça delegation attended the
inauguration of the host club, La Peña Barcelonista Taoro del Valle’s new headquarters. Then
a discussion session was organised where those present spoke about current Barça affairs,
especially those related to supporters clubs. The Social Commission member, Josep Ignasi Macià,
listened the problems some of the local supporters faced and provided some useful feedback of value
to both FC Barcelona and supporters in the Canary Islands. In the evening an institutional supper
was held in the company of some of the local authorities.
Action packed Saturday
All kinds of things happened on Saturday, starting with a visit to the old quarter and
a parade of some one hundred Barça fans. The next stop was the Town Hall, where the mayor of La
Orotava, Isaac Valencia, received the Barça delegation. From there, the supporters visited the
Teide National Park, which was recently declared a National Human Heritage Site. The long day ended
with a closing gala supper attended by some 200 people to put an end to a day of fellowship and
Barça passion.
FC Barcelona director Jacint Borràs thanked all of the Canary islanders for the way they had
made the Barça delegation feel so welcome and explained some more about the club’s charity
work. He commended the supporters clubs on their contribution and described them as the nucleus of
the club. A nucleus that is growing in number around the world every day.
Country meal to finish
A country meal at La Caldera put an end to this celebration of Barça support in the Canary
Islands. Three days full of Barça sentiment, debate and enjoyment so brilliantly organised by the
Peña Barcelonista de La Orotava and especially its president Pedro Ángel Gómez and the Advisroy
Commission’s delegate for the Canary Islands, Yamal Hawach.
Supporters in the Canaries are now looking forward to the next Baku which will be held next
year on the island of La Gomera.
