In the 25 years since the 1982 World Cup, the Camp Nou has continued to host a variety of important sporting and social events, including many benefit matches. We highlight the most important landmarks of the last 25 years.
06/07/1985. Lluís Llach concert: The Camp Nou was packed to the rafters to listen
to this emblematic Catalan singer-songwriter. A day that has gone down in the history of Catalan
music.
10/09/1988. Concert for Amnesty International: This concert brought together
famous names such as Sting, Youssou N’Dour, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel, El Último de la
Fila and Bruce Springsteen.
05/09/1989. Testimonial match for Migueli: The Camp Nou paid an emotional tribute
to Migueli, who holds the Club record for matches played. The match between Barça and Bulgaria
ended 3-1.
07/06/1992. A league title won in the final seconds: Barça beat Athletic Bilbao
2-0, with goals from Stoichkov, but had to wait for the final whistle of the match between Tenerife
and Real Madrid, which Tenerife won 3-2. The stadium experienced the tension of a last-minute title
win in real time.
08/08/1992. Final of the Olympic Games football tournament: Spain, featuring
Albert Ferrer and Pep Guardiola, beat Poland 3-2 in the final.
20/06/1993. A second league title won at the last moment: Barça beat Real Sociedad
1-0 and Real Madrid lost for the second year running in Tenerife (2-0). Barça lifted their third
consecutive league title and the second in front of their fans in the Camp Nou.
14/05/1994. A third league title won at the last moment!: Barça beat Sevilla 5-2
and this time the luck came from La Coruña. With the scoreboard standing at 0-0 in the match
between Deportivo and Valencia, Djukic missed a last minute penalty to hand the fourth league title
to Johan Cruyff.
07/11/1995. Benefit match for UNICEF: The stadium hosted a benefit match between a
Europe XI and an American XI that ended 3-4.
13/07/1997. Concert of the Three Tenors: Josep Carreras, Plácido Domingo and
Luciano Pavarotti gave a concert in front of 70,000 spectators.
28/11/1998. Inauguration of the Centenary celebrations: A marvellous party in the
stadium with the “Centenary song” and the Barça anthem, sung by the Catalan
singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat, kicked off a year of celebrations marking the 100th
anniversary of FC Barcelona.
10/03/1999. Testimonial match for Johan Cruyff: The Camp Nou was completely sold
out to pay tribute to the manager that won the first European Cup. Barça played a team made up of
members of the legendary ‘Dream Team’ (2-0).
28/04/1999. The Centenary match: A Brazil team featuring Romario, Ronaldo and
Rivaldo drew 2-2 with Barça on a rainy April day.
26/05/1999. Final of the Champions League: Manchester United beat Bayern Munich
2-1 in the final of the Champions League in the Camp Nou. Two late goals snatched the title from
under the Germans’ noses.
29/11/2000. Match against drugs: Barça played a Spanish League XI in a benefit
match to aid the fight against drugs. The Spanish League XI won 2-1.
30/11/2004. Match against AIDS: Once again, the Camp Nou hosted another benefit
match, this time to raise funds and awareness for the fight against AIDS. Barça beat a World Stars
XI 4-3.
15/02/2005. Benefit match for victims of the S.E. Asia Tsunami: Two teams
captained by Ronaldinho and Shevchenko met in the stadium to raise funds for victims of the Boxing
Day tsunami. Ronaldinho’s team won 6-3.
15/05/2005. Celebration for the 2004/05 league title: For the first time in the
history of the Club, a league title was celebrated in the Camp Nou instead of in Barcelona’s
Sant Jaume Square.
07/08/2005. U2 Concert: The Irish rock band gave a concert in a packed Camp Nou.
29/11/2005. Match in favour of peace in the Middle East: Barça beat the Peace
Team, made up of both Palestinian and Israeli players, 2-0.
18/05/2006. Celebration of the Paris Champions League: On 17th May 2006, Barça won
the second Champions League title in the Club’s history. The following day, an enthusiastic
Camp Nou welcomed home the team.
18/04/2007. Messi, the best goal of the XXI century: The Argentine striker scored
one of the best goals in the history of football against Getafe in the semi-final of the Kings Cup.
The move was almost identical to the goal scored by Maradona in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico
against England.
